Averis was born about 1750, the son of Harmon Bishop and Amy Avoris. He was named in the 1761 Surry County will of his grandfather, John “Avories”.
In 1782, he was listed in the Continental Census for Sussex County as Averis Byshop, with 4 white people and 3 black people in his household. [1] That year he was on the Land Tax List as owning 369 acres [2] and the Personal Property Tax List with 1 white poll, 3 negroes, 2 horses, and 12 head of cattle.[3]
Averis was on the 1787 Tax List of Sussex County with 276 acres but it indicated his residence as Surry County. He was not listed in 1788 and his Sussex estate was assessed tax in 1789 and again in 1790, indicating his death.
The will of John Avoris, his grandfather, leaves use of Negro boy, Ben, to his son-in-law Harmon Bishop and wife Amy during their lifetimes, then to go to his grandson “Avories Bishop and his heirs”. Averis died before his father and Ben is named on the personal property tax lists of Harmon Bishop in 1784 and 1798.
