Biography

Harmon Bishop was born about 1725. He married Amy Avoris, daughter of John Avories. John named his son-in-law Harmon, his daughter Amy, and his grandson Averis Bishop, in his will. [1] The known children of Harmon and Amy were:

  1. Averis Bishop abt 1750-1788
  2. Thomas Bishop Sr 1755-1831
  3. Wyatt Bishop 1759-1837
  4. Augustine Bishop 1765-aft 1840

Harmon was in Surry County in 1753 when he purchased 150 acres from William Stuart.[2] This property lay in Sussex County by the time Harmon and his wife sell it in 1758 to Sloman Wynne of Dinwiddie County.[3]

On 17 Oct 1764, Harmon Bishop of Surry County purchased 150 acres from Lewis Lashley and Katherine, mother of Lashley. This land was in Sussex County, bounded by Old Town Swamp. He paid taxes on the same 150 acres until 1785, when he sold that property to Wyatt Bishop. The deed stated that both Harmon and Wyatt were living in Martins Brandon Parish in Prince George County. Augustine Bishop was witness to the deed. In 1786, Wyatt took up the tax obligation.

Harmon Bishop signed his will in Surry County on 3 May 1796 or 1797. (Both dates appear in will copy.) It was proved in court 26 Sep 1814. In the document, he named his sons Wyatt, Thomas, and Augustine, as well as grandsons Hamblin and Harbert. (Son Averis Bishop died in 1788.) His three named sons were directed to act as executors. Hartwell and Austin Coneley were witnesses. Harmon willed that his three sons were to inherit his negroes and his property equally.

During the time between the making and probating of his will, Harmon continued to live in Surry County, with slaves Ben, Moses, Ned and Faithy.

On 24 Oct 1814, Wyatt and Augustine sued their brother Thomas in Surry County Chancery Court over the partitioning of the slaves: Moses. Faithy. Alcock, Mason, Mary Ann, Ready, Henry, Collier, Jim, and Davy. An agreement was reached and the case was settled 20 Jun 1816.

Name Notes

First name spellings of Harmon and Herman were used interchangeably in his records. Tax records were usually under Herman, but not always. His will was signed Harmon, as was the deed of land to his son Wyatt.
