Biography

The following Biography was submitted to the Kingman County Kansas Historical Society by Leila Black Sinnett, daughter of Clinton and Persia Sizelove Black. Please keep in mind Leila would have been about 95 years old when the book was published in 1984.     Clinton Black was born in Hancock County, Illinois, USA. he was a son of Christopher Black and Margaret Lamb. Clinton Black married Cynthia Anderson of Marion County, Illinois. In 1862, he enlisted in the Army and fought in the Civil War during the time Abraham Lincoln was president. Later he was a member of the G. A. R. When he returned home from the war, his wife could not be found. He met and married Percia Sizelove. They came to Kansas in a covered wagon to Lerado. They lived in a two-story house on a farm five and one-half miles south of Turon in Bell Township, Reno County in 1880. Besides farming, Clinton raised race horses. One day on the way to church, the horse got scared and ran into a deep mud hole. Dad held the horse's head up and kept the buggy from tipping over. Mother held me high to keep my head above the muddy water. It ruined my dress but my shoes never squeaked like they did before the mud bath.   Grandmother Sizelove lived with us. We moved to East Fourth Street in Kingman. After father had the house built, he planted a large fruit tree and grapevine orchard.   Clinton and Percia Sizelove Black's children were: William Black who had a blacksmith shop at Penalosa. He married Elsie Tennel. Lorenda Bell was born March 19, 1873, and was nicknamed Luda. She married Manuel Schockley and lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Eva, who married George Maylon. Mary Etta was born June 14, 1878 and married Charley McOsker. They lived on a ranch near Alva, Oklahoma and lived in a sod house. Mary Etta delivered mail on horseback. One day Charley went to fix fence and took his gun along. When he crawled through the fence, the gun discharged and killed him. Mary Etta and Charley had a family of eleven children. She and the children managed the ranch until most of them got married. She then sold the ranch and moved to California to live near her married children.   The remaining children of Clinton and Percia Black were Hattie Catherine, born June 6, 1875, and died as a child. She choked to death with whooping cough. Kay Black also died at a young age. Della Black was born June 10, 1885, and married Jess Sinnett. Leila Black was born November 18, 1889, and married Leslie Sinnett.   Hattie and Kay Black and Grandmother Sizelove are all three buried in the Lerado Cemetery.   Mary Etta was a grand lady. Through all her trials and tribulations, she came up laughing, seeing the brighter side of life."     NOTE: On the 1860 census Clinton Black lived with a family in Mason County, IL by the name of Anderson so that might have been where Leila came up with the name Cynthia Anderson. Maybe she heard her father speak of them....   According to records Clinton married Paulina Patience Garrett 12 Feb 1861. His sister Rachel Black Smith also gave that name on the affidavit she provided to Persia Sizelove Black's application for a Civil War Widow's Pension. "Paulina P. Black, wife of Clinton" is buried in Pratt Cemetery, Mason County, IL.

The company was mustered in with 95 officers and men, of whom 5 were killed in action, 3 died of wounds, 1 was accidentally killed and 15 received wounds in battle which did not prove fatal while in the service. 13 died of disease, 22 were discharged for disability, 1 was transferred, and 40 officers and men were mustered out with the regiment.
Under the careful training of Lieutenant Chatfield this company became very proficient in the skirmish drill, and upon all occasions performed its duty with zeal and energy. [1] Clinton served with his company through all the campaigns in which the regiment was engaged until severely wounded by a gunshot wound to right leg on 25 Feb 1864 at Buzzard Roost, Georgia. Afterwards he was sent to the hospital, where he was discharged November 1, 1864.

The funeral of Clinton C. Black, who passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 1923, was held from the Christian church at 2 o'clock last Saturday afternoon. Rev. A. J. Aikins had charge of the services. Intement was made at Walnut Hill cemetery.
He leaves to mourn his death his aged wife, who is very ill, and six children: W. C. Black of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Eva Spiker of Pawhuska, Okla., Mrs. Luda Shockley of Enid, Okla., Mrs. Etta McOsker of Winchester, Okla., Della Black and Lelia Sinnett of this city.
Clinton Black was born in Hancock county, Ill. [sic], of Feb. 16, 1840. He served as a federal officer in the 85th Ill. Vol. Inf. about three years, taking part in several engagements.
On March 2, 1868, he was unted in marriage at Havana, Ill., to Persia Sizelove. Mr. and Mrs. Black moved to Reno county in 1880 and came to this city about twenty years ago, where he has lived since.
During the Hamilton meeting in 1910 Mr. Black confessed his faith in Christ and has followed closely the teachings of his Master since. Mr. Black as stated in the service Saturday, came to church many times when others would have thought themselves too sick to even sit up. He loved his Master and loved to be in his place of worship. While his years of Christian experience were short in comparison to the years he lived, he proved himself a devout Christian to his fellowmen during this short period. He will be greatly missed at church as well as on the streets of Kingman.
