Roy enlisted on 5 Jan 1916 at Liverpool. His papers reveal that he was born at Parramatta, was 23 years and 3 months old and a fruit salesman. He had fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair and was of Church of England religion. He was unmarried and his address was put as Beecroft Road, Beecroft, Greater Sydney, New South Wales. His next of kin was put as his Father, Henry G Black, Beecroft Road, Beecroft, Greater Sydney, New South Wales.
Roy's rank on enlistment was Private in the 36th Battalion, A Company. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A72 Beltana on 13 May 1916. He served in the 14th Light Trench Mortar Battery.
He was gassed in action whilst on detachment to 14th Aust Light Trench Mortar Battery on 31 Jul 1918 and again with mustard gas on 3 Aug 1918. He returned to Australia on to 2 June 1919.

Burial

1935, Dural, New South Wales, Australia. St. Jude's Church of England Cemetery.
Roy's grave is located in the north sector, row 5, grave 5-10, and bears a headstone.
