The Blackshaw Connection: During that employment at the brewery George must have become friends with his future father in law John Blackshaw who was also employed by Bradley as a brewer.

John Blackshaw later established his own Brewery Foston Brewery on the site of the current Goulburn golf club.

Records obtained show that John Blackshaw was born in 1803 in Foston England and married a Mary Slater in 1824 when he was 21.

John Blackshaw and his family immigrated to Australia per the sailing ship “Britton” Arriving in 1841 indicating he was 38 at that time.

John Blackshaw and his wife had 9 children all born Scopton, England, with records showing their youngest son John born 1843, died on the ship en route to Australia.

At the time of their arrival in Australia John and Mary Blackshaw’s 4th child Jemina, the future wife of George Topham would have been 13 years old. The Blackshaw family of Goulburn were a well-known and respected family of early Goulburn with the current road leading to the present golf course named after them. After leaving the Goulburn brewery John Blackshaw started his own brewing business known as Foston Brewery. The original brewery site is located on the site of the current Goulburn Golf course.
