In 1882 Walter Atkin farmed on his father-in-law, Michael Shriver's farm at Marengo, Iowa. He was hailed out so he moved his family to New Castle, Nebraska that fall so they could plant the 1883 crop. Walter's parents moved to New Castle from Marengo in the spring of 1885, buying an adjoining place.
