Biography

Susan Blagdon was born to John Blagdon and Elizabeth Thomas (Hall) Blagdon and christened on 17 May 1835 in Plymouth St Andrew, Devon, England, the ninth of twelve children.^[1] She appears as a six-year-old living with her parents and siblings in Bath Place, Plymouth, ^[2] but ten years later she is living away from home and working as a house servant for William (a butcher) and Catherine Budge at 33 James Street, Plymouth Charles.^[3]

In the March quarter of 1856, ^[4] Susan married Daniel George Jackson in Plymouth. In the 1861 census, Susan (plus toddler Annie Elizabeth) is enumerated as boarding with George and Sarah Richmond at 5 Windsor Place, East Stonehouse. George is a coachbuilder, and there are several milliners and drapers in his house, who were perhaps making the furnishings for the coaches?^[5]

More children arrived, so the 1871 census showed Daniel and Susan with Annie, John 1863, and Minnie 1870. It also shows that they have moved to 14 Frederick Street, Plymouth - and a curious coincidence? A George Richwood, a coachbuilder, is their next-door-neighbour...^[6] The family has moved again by the 1881 census, and are living at 68 Union Street, Plymouth, with Daniel described as a 'Naval Pensioner'. They are living next door to a piano teacher and his callisthenics-teacher wife.^[7] The 1891 census arrived, and the family has moved again, this time to 4 Clarence Place, East Stonehouse. The two eldest children have left home. ^[8] 5 Adelaide Terrace, Plymouth, is their new address on the 1901 census, with daughter Minnie still unmarried and at home, ^[9] although Minnie died in 1908, age 37.

On the 1911 census, Daniel and Susan, now both in their late seventies are living in one room at 5 Embankment Road, Plymouth.^[10]
