Biography

Elijah Phineas was born in 1779, the fifth of six children and the second of three sons born to Phineas Abraham Blakeman and Elizabeth Waldecker.[1] His siblings were:

  1. Frances Sarah (Blakeman) Allen (1771 - )
  2. Curtiss Blakeman (1777 - 1833)

Elijah Phineas married 27 Apr 1807 Mary Hubbell in Stratford, Connecticut, USA.[2][3].

Mary died 22 November 1809 two years and seven months after she and Elijah were married. There were no children from this marriage.[4]

Elijah Phineas married (2nd) 26 August 1810, Stratford, Connecticut, USA, his second wife Abiah Curtiss, Stratford, Connecticut, daughter of Henry Thompson Curtiss and Phebe (Sherman) Curtiss, two dates of birth born 20 or 26 June 1782.[5][6] Their children were:

  1. Henry Blakeman (1811 - 1864)[7]
  2. Phineas Blakeman (1813 -1870)
  3. Curtiss Blakeman (1814 - 1884 )[8]
  4. Mary Blakeman (1817 - 1867)
  5. Elijah Blakeman (1818 -1856)[9]
  6. Frances Blakeman (1819 - 1856)
  7. George Edward Blakeman (1822 - 1856)

Seaman

Elijah followed his older brother Curtiss into a life at sea. His name is listed as Master of the Brig Nancy.[10] On April 14, 1806, Elijah was second mate aboard the newly built Trident with his brother Curtiss, Master at the helm. The ship left New York for Canton,[11] "drawing seventeen feet nine inches water.

On July 27 Blakeman wrote to Wolcott (ship owner) from Anjier in Java that he was pleased with the ship's performance, but his brother Elijah had crippled himself by a fall from the mizzen topsail yard to the deck in a squall.

Military

Elijah was part of the Connecticut militia in the War of 1812.[12]

Inheritance

In 1812, he is mentioned in his aunt, Fanny Waldecker's will.[13]

Emigration

In May 1819 Elijah, Abiah, and their five children Henry 8, Phineas 6, Curtis 5, Mary 2, and Elijah 1, were part of a group of about 100 pioneers, following Elijah's brother Captain Curtiss Blakeman (age 40) to the Illinois Territory.[14] They traveled in a two-horse wagon and settled in section 32 - a farm now known as Sutter place. They returned to Connecticut in 1923, with a new daughter Frances only 3 months on the journey east.[15]

The following appeared Tue, Feb 25, 1823 in The Charleston Mercury, and Morning Advertiser (Charleston, South Carolina) ·

"Mr. Elijah Blakeman and family, consisting of a wife and seven children, arrived at Stratford on Friday last, from Illinois. Mr. B. emigrated from Stratford to the Western Wilds in the year 1819, with his brother, Captain Curtis Blakeman, in hopes of bettering his condition. But in this he was sadly disappointed; and, after remaining there for better than three years, ungoing all the privations and sufferings incident to a new settlement, he has returned to his native town naked and destitute. Mr. B. was nearly one hundred days in returning, having been detained some time by his wife giving birth to a child. The people of Stratford have acted with apparent feelings of generosity and kindness in furnishing this distressed family, not only with the necessaries and comforts of life, but in providing them, in part, with means to facilite their return. - Bridgeport Farmer.

Timeline

In the 1820 census Elijah and Abiah were in Madison, Illinois, United States.[17]

Elijah was listed in the 1830 and 1840 census at Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut [18][19]

Death and Legacy

Elijah died in Marine, Illinois 6 September 1843. His death was noted in the Republican Farmer, Bridgeport, Connecticut on 24 October 1843, and is inscribed on a monument in his hometown of Stratford.[20][21][22] The Blakeman monument is in Union Cemetery, though it is unlikely that Elijah's body could have been returned from Illinois for burial in Connecticut.[23]
