Biography

When John J. Blan was born on 18 July 1815, in South Carolina, United States, his father, William Bland, was 43 and his mother, Elizabeth Wood, was 40.

He married Elizabeth Martha Cochran about 1840 in South Carolina and had three sons and two daughters: Wilson, George, William, Julia, and Louisa.

He lived in Lowndes, Alabama in 1850 and Troy, Pike, Alabama in 1860. Occupation was Blacksmith in 1860 and real estate value of $1250 and personal estate value of $1180.

John served as a Private in the 60th Alabama Confederate Infantry Regiment, F Company, enlisting on January 1, 1863. He was 47 years old. Place of enlistment was Bristol, Alabama. John was listed as Absent sick at Chickamauga, Knoxville, Bean Station, near Bermuda Hundreds skirmish, near Richmond and Drewrys Bluff. Remarks: One time Co A 1st Battalion, Hilliards Legion, substitute for N.M. Barnett. Residence: Troy, Alabama.

After the war, his second marriage was to Cynthia Malinda (Shields) Ramsay on August 19, 1869, in Pike, Alabama. They were the parents of at least one daughter.

He died on April 20, 1875 in Troy, Pike County, Alabama, at the age of 59, and was buried in Beulah Cemetery, Troy, Pike County, Alabama.

If there ever were dates on the stone, they have worn away from age. Located just inside the fenced area with "S. H. Blan", a footstone "M. E. S.", unmarked grave (identified as Mary Ann Eunice Jones Butts), and "Martha M. Bland (Nee) Jones wife of J. P. Morris". Inscription: C V (Confederate Veteran)

Note: John J. Blan was the father of the publisher of THE MESSENGER."
