Marie Josephine Blanchard was born in 1810 in Saint Gabriel, Iberville, Louisiana, United States, daughter of Frederick Silvain Blanchard (1777–1823) and Marie Genevieve Bertrand (~1788–~1834). ^[1]

Josephine was the daughter of emigrants from New Scotland (Nova Scotia). Her family first settled in St. James parish on the Mississippi River. ^{[2] [3] [4]} In moving to the Atakapas, her family lived at Grand Pointe, upper Bayou Teche, near present day Breaux Bridge in St. Martin parish, Louisiana.
