Biography

This profile is part of the Blanchard Name Study.

Marie Josephine Blanchard was born in 1810 in Saint Gabriel, Iberville, Louisiana, United States, daughter of Frederick Silvain Blanchard (1777–1823) and Marie Genevieve Bertrand (~1788–~1834). [1]

Josephine was the daughter of emigrants from New Scotland (Nova Scotia). Her family first settled in St. James parish on the Mississippi River. [2] [3] [4] In moving to the Atakapas, her family lived at Grand Pointe, upper Bayou Teche, near present day Breaux Bridge in St. Martin parish, Louisiana.

This is a picture of The Teche Bayou which begins in Port Barre, Louisiana where it draws water from Bayou Courtableau and then flows southward to meet the Lower Atchafalaya River at Patterson, Louisiana. During the 18th-century Acadian migration to the area - then known as the Attakapas region - the Teche was the primary means of transportation.
