Josephine was the daughter of emigrants from New Scotland (Nova Scotia). Her family first settled in St. James parish on the Mississippi River.

In moving to the Atakapas, her family lived at Grand Pointe, upper Bayou Teche, near present day Breaux Bridge in St. Martin parish, Louisiana.
