John was born in 1923. He was the son of Elijah Blanton and Malta Ratliff.
There are discrepancies regarding his race. According to census records as well as his death certificate, he was white. However he was recorded as Indian (and Mexican) on a World War II draft registration form from April 15, 1942. He was listed as Negro and colored on another form from June 30, 1942.
John passed away at the age of twenty-seven from pulmonary tuberculosis on October 15, 1950 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
