Biography

"DEATHS. Blayney — August 22nd, at his residence, 32, Eccles street, Dublin, Hugh Blayney, aged 95 years." [1]

"DEATH OF MR HUGH BLAYNEY. In our obituary notices of to-day we record the death of a most remarkable man, Hugh Blayney, Esq. of 32 Eccles-street, and 11 Upper Exchange- street. Born in the county of Antrim near the close of the last century, of an old and respect able Catholic family, some of whom being in business in this city, he came here in 1810, and since that time has been carrying on business in the old and well-known business house, No 11 Upper Exchange - street. Humble and courteous to all, he was a favourite amongst the people. His own wants were few, but he was ever solicitous for the wants of others, especially the poor and afflicted of his fellow- citizens, as his annual contributions to hospials, orphanages, and asylums can testify. By his untiring energy he amassed a princely fortune. The bulk of his immense wealth goes, it is understood, to support charitable institutions for the relief of suffering humanity in this city. On Tuesday his remains will be removed from his late residence, No 32 Eccles street, to the Church of SS.. Michael and John, and after a Solemn Office and High Mass for the repose of his soul the body will be interred in the family vault underneath the church." [2]

The will of Hugh Blayney late of 32 Eccles st, Dublin, grocer who died 22 Aug 1885 was proved at the principal registry by Nicholas Walsh of Saints Michand and John Chapel Essez quay, Canon and P.P. , James M'Mahon of Saint Michan's Chapel North Anne st, Archdeacon and Edward Fottrell of Harcourt st, merchant all in said city, three of the surviving executors.

"Good Luck of a Buffalo Policeman. P. B. McMullen, a police officer attached to Station No 1, has fallen heir to between $50,000 and $ 75,000 by death of his uncle Hugh Blayney, a rich vintner and grocer of Dublin, who in his will bequeaths almost $500,000 to charitable objects. " [4]
