Biography

Note: Son of William Branon & Jane Bleakney, named William has will dated 17 may 1814and lists aunts Margaret & Hannah Bleckley of Menallan Twp, uncle James Bleckleyof Franklin twp.
James was a Sargent in the Revelutionary War 1775-1783 andwas killed at the battle of Stoney Point.
Land Warrant Document #2503 dated303/1803 to Margaret Bleakney, sister of James Bleakney.

Depositions given:

On March 22, 1803 both Margret Blekney and Benjamin Miller deposed byJohn McPherson said that Margret was the full sister and legal Heir at Law of James Bleakney. That he had served as a Sergeant in the Pennsylvania line underCapt. James Waugh. That he fell in the Action of Stoney Point.

On November 6, 1803 Cattey Dinning deposed by Andrew McLenahan that James Blackney enlisted as a Serjeant for 3 years under Captain James Waugh of Cumberland County andState of Pennsylvania. The believes from general report that James was killedat the Battle of Stoney Point.

On November 16, 1803 Margaret Bleakney (spelled as) deposed by Dan and Henry Spyker that her brother James served with thePennsylvania Contential Line under a company commanded Captain James Waugh fromCumberland County, PA and fell at Stoney Point.
She further appointed her friend, Samuel Maclay, Esq. (one of the Senators of the USA in the Northumberland)as her attorney for recovery and receipt.

On February 5, 1805 ElizabethBlakeney (spelled as) deposed by Henry Spyker (1st time) that her brother, JamesBlakeney, enlisted for three years as a Serjant under Capt. James Vaugh (spelled as). Further, he was killed at the taking of Stoney Point.

On September 25, 1805 Elizabeth Blakney (spelled as) deposed (2nd time) by Henry Spyker that her brother, James Blakney, served under Capt. James Waugh and was killed atStoney Point.

On February 3, 1806 Benjamin Miller deposed a second time by Henry Spyker that James Blakney (brother to Margaret Blakney) served in the Pennsylvania line under the command of General C. Waugh and fell at Stoney Point.

Note: Both Margaret and Elizabeth state in their depositions that they live in White Deer Township in the County of Northumberland, PA.

Samuel Bryan, Comptroller General of the Accounts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, wrote a letter certifying that an application for one John or James Blackney, Sergeant in the Sixth Regiment of the late Pennsylvania Line was documented in a book remaining in the Office of Comptroller General of and in behalf of the Officers and Soldiers of the late Pennsylvania Line for Donation Lands under the Laws of the Commonwealth. Letter is dated 12/18/1804.

In August 1857, John Bleakney at the age of 78 years and a past resident of Columbiana County, Ohio takes the land warrant to Hancock County, Virginia courts via his attorney. Reasonsgiven by the attorneys was that the court there was more convenient. He is stated as being the only surviving brother of James and Margaret Bleakney. He states that Margaret died without issue (no children). He also states that both hismother and father are long since deceased. He states that by provision of
entitlement as stated in the act of Congress it passed to him on 05/051855. (I would assume that Margaret passed on either that date or just before).

I`mquestioning if this James, Margaret, Elizabeth and John are from our Bleakneyslines. If John was 78 years of age in 1857 he would have been born in either
1778 or 1779. James would have died in July of 1779 at Stoney Point.

Buried JUL 1779.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
