Sidney was Christened in 1861. [1]. He was the son of John Blomfield of Norfolk, England and Louisa Wright also of England. His father was a Miller/Farmer who employed 6 men and 2 boys and his wife Louisa.
In 1887 he gained his 2nd Mates Certificate.

By 1907 he was Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages for the District until his resignation in 1914 .
He was appointed Secretary of the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and in 1911 he also took on the position of Country Cler, a job he continued until retiring in 1937. The family were now living at the Port. He was also Treasurer of the Nelson Plunket Society.
In 1900 he is registered in the Nelson Electoral Roll as living at Manuka Street, with one son and three daughters.
Shipwrecked on the Pleione 1887 - Waikanae, New Zealand.[3] Sidney was a shipmate onboard the Pleione 44 days out from England when the ship mistakedly took Kapiti for Shepherds Island and ran aground. All cargo was saved and only one passenger died as a result of the wreck. There were only 6 passengers on board but a great amount of cargo.1888 – ‘Pleione’ runs aground on Waikanae Beach'"; [4] Four months after grounding , the ship was refloated and made a further 9 trips to and from New Zealand. However, lady luck was smiling on Sidney who although he received an injury; we read below this was to change the course of his remaining life.
Sydney served as an ANZAC in WW1 Service Number 49327. He enlisted and started his service on the 16 Jan 1917. By the 12th of June he was on his way overseas to defend king and country. He returned and ended his service on the 11 July 1919.
On his return he was Awarded the British Warm Medal and the Victory Medal [5]

Josephine (Rochfort) Blomfield was born on the 15 Feb 1877 and died on 25 September 1935 in New Zealand.[6]
Sidney married[5] Josephine Rochfort in 1901 in New Zealand and the couple lived in Nelson, right up at the top of New Zealand. Nelson renowned for having the most amount of sunshine out of all New Zealand towns.

Sidney was a sailor and his occupation was the reason for meeting his bride Josephine. Josephine worked in Nelson at the Nursing Home (Hospital) alongside her mother Amelia. [8] and was one of a few survivors. Contracting Pneumonia, Josephine nursed him back to health. He subsequently travelled to England but returned to New Zealand in 1901 and married Josephine Rochfort.

Sidney died on the 13th of July 1949 in his 81st year. He had outlived his wife Josephine by 14 years. [10] and his Probated Will[11] was ratified on the 18th of January 1950. The will left portions of his estate shared amongst his four children. HIs executors were his son Dennis and his son in law William Bullivant husband of Barbara Caroline his youngest daughter.
