Robert was born in 1891 in Ballylig, Glynn, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Samuel Bodles and Ellen Burns.[1]
Robert was lost at sea while serving as an able seaman on SS Argus during the Great War. The ship left Lerwick for Tromso on 20th October 1917 and disappeared the next day possibly due to a mine or a collision. It belonged to Shamrock Shipping of Larne (Thomas Jack). He is not commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as there is doubt whether it was war-related. However, he is remembered on Glynn War Memorial (only a mile or 2 from Ballylig) and in Magheramorne Presbyterian Church (which is on the Ballylig Road). He was a member of Lily of the North LOL 392, which meets right beside Ballylig.
Death Location: On SS Argus between Lerwick, Shetland Islands and Tromso, Norway
