- German historian, scholar & naturalist - founder of "Naturforschung" or "Nature research" in Mecklenberg
- s/o Franz Christian Boll (pastor) & Friederike Brückner[1][2]
- studied theology & natural sciences but also was interested in and explored geology, botany, meteorology, petrography and zoology
- pursued historical interests with his brother, Franz, with whose family he often lived
- chronically ill
- 1846 founding member, " Freunde der Naturgeschichte Mecklenburgs" (Friends of Mecklenburg's Natural History)
- good friend with poet & writer Fritz Reuter
- 1992 Ernst Boll Environmental Prize established
- Fossil, rock & geology collection was in the possession of the Neubrandenburg Museum but is now in the natural history collection of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Müritzeum.
