When James William Bonser was born on 3 September 1897 ^[1] in Northam, Western Australia, his father, Abraham Bonser, was 27 and his mother, Margaret Giblett, was 17.

He married Bridget Margaret (Dolly) Gorman on 8 October 1935 ^[2] in Northam, Western Australia. They had no children.

He died on 5 September 1978 ^[3] at the age of 80. He was cremated at Bunbury Cemetery and his ashes scattered on 8 September 1978 on his 81st birthday ^[4].
