Biography

Sarah Booker was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1862. She was the daughter of Thomas Booker and Ann Moore. Her birth was registered at Cheltenham in the June quarter.

In the 1871 census, she was aged 8 and living with her parents and 3 brothers at Coberley, Gloucestershire.

In 1874, aged 12, she emigrated with her parents and 4 brothers to New Zealand on the ship Cathcart, arriving at Lyttleton on 29 August 1874.

She married George Batty in 1881 or 1882 at Oamaru and eventually settled at Orari.

She died on 16 April 1933, aged probably 71 (but recorded as 72), and was buried at Geraldine Cemetery.

She was born at Cochelford, Gloucestershire and accompanied her father and mother and their family to New Zealand in 1864 on the sailing ship Cathcart, under Captain Crawford, in a fairly smart time of 80 days. They landed at Lyttleton and went to Geraldine. In 1881, Sarah married George Batty at Oamaru and lived for a short time at Temuka, Woodbury, and Winchester before settling at Orari, where they lived for 47 years. She was 72 years of age and survived by her husband, five daughters, Mrs T. Austin (Orari), Mrs T. H. Loach (Timaru), Mrs A. G. Loach (Geraldine), Mrs C. Colville (Tinwald), Mrs W. Berry (Temuka), and two sons, E. G. Batty and P. Batty, both of Christchurch. One son, Charles Batty, of Dunedin, predeceased her. [The Cathcart sailing was 1874, and her father apparently Thomas Booker.]
