Thomas was born at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA, on 18 January 1897. He was the 4th child of Edward Booth, a labourer and Sarah E Vera.[1][2][3]
In the 1900 census Thomas (age 3) was living in rented accommodation at 137 5th Street, Fall River, with his father Edward (35), a Day Laborer, mother Sarah (28) and siblings Sarah (6), Edward (5) and Charles (1) along with his Grandfather John (70), born in Portugal, and Uncle Thomas Verra (30) a Slasher Tender in a Cotton Mill. All, except the infants Charles and Thomas, could read, write and speak English.[4]
In 1910, when he was aged 13, Thomas was living at 5th Street, Fall River, with his father Edward (44), a Laborer in the Street Department, mother Sarah (38) and siblings Sarah (16), Edward (14) and Charles (11), George (8) and Etta (1). By then, he had attended school and could read and write.[5]
Thomas registered for service in World War I with the Fall River Registration Board at 102 South Main Street, Fall River on 4 June 1918. He lived with his parents at 197 Rodman Street, Fall River, was aged 21 and described as brown-eyed with brown hair and not physically disqualified. He was enlisted in the Navy on 11 July 1918 and 13 January 1919.[3][6]
In 1920 Thomas (22) was Department Store Salesman, living with his parents at Rodman Street. The household included his father, Edward (53), a Street Work Laborer, mother, Sarah (49) and siblings, Sarah (26), a Cotton Mill Weaver, Edward (24), Charles (20), a Print Works Cloth Folder, George (17) a Print Works Laborer and Etta (10) along with his uncle Thomas H Vera (46) a Slasher Tender in a Cotton Mill.[7]
Thomas was discharged from the Navy on 30 September 1921 aged 24.[6]
He was employed as a city Fireman from at least 1925 until 1950.[11]
At the time of the 1930 Census, Thomas (33) and Mary (33) were living with Mary's parents, William and Catherine Dempsey and their son William at 35 Conant Street, Fall River. The household included their children Margaret (5), Thomas (4) and William (9 months).[12]
By 1940 they had moved to 112 Coral Street, Fall River. The household comprised Thomas (43) and Mary (44), their children Margaret (15), Thomas (14), William (11) and Catherine (6) and Mary's parents William (75) and Catherine (73).[13] All, except Mary's parents, were still there in 1950 but 10 years older.[14]
