"Enlisted 3 Sep 61 at age 19, a Teacher from Beaver Co. PA. Mustered in 29 Oct 61 as a Private. Promoted 15 Nov 62 to Corporal. Discharged 5 April 63 at New Bern, NC due to fever & ague. Mustered into Battery B, 5th PA Heavy Artillery on 20 Aug 64 as 1st Sergeant. Commissioned 10 Jan 65 as 2nd Lieutenant, Co. H, 5th PA Heavy Artillery. Mustered out 30 June 65 at Pittsburgh, PA."^[1] He married Alice (Barton) Boots, who passed away in 1886.

He married Clara Amelia Baker (nee Alexander) 1 Oct 1890.^{[2] [3]}At the time he married her, he was listed as a dry goods merchant.^[4]
