"Jonette was the daughter of Lord Borthwick of Borthwick Castle who had been one of the Guardians of the King in his infancy." [1]
On 28th February 1534 the King confirmed a feu charter of William Lauder of Haltoun (with the consent of William Lord Borthwick) to his son and heir apparent Alexander Lauder and Jonette Borthwick his spouse, daughter of the said Lord, of the lands of Over-Gogar, Edinburghshire; lands of Newbigging in Lauderdale; lands of Nether Kidstoun in Peebleshire.[2]
A reversion of three husband lands and a half of Newbigging [91 acres] was granted by Mr David Lauder, Vicar of Earlston, to William Lauder of Haltoun upon the sum of £100, 16 November 1514, subscribed and sealed. Instrument of sasine was then done by the said William Lauder of Hatton to Alexander, his son, and Janet Borthwick his spouse, of the 20 merks lands of Newbigging, 10 April 1534, James Little, priest, notary thereto.[3] (This Newbigging is slightly north of the Royal Burgh of Lauder.)
Jonette (or Janet) appears to be still living on 17th January 1564/5 when her son William Lauder of Haltoun was granted his deceased father's half of the lands of Newbigging in Lauderdale which lands had been held by his parents in conjunct fee. Relationships given.[4]
Notes
Jonette (Borthwick) Lauder cannot be “of Haltoun”; that designation is reserved for her husband in Scottish feudal law. If he died without heirs the entail would have carried the estate to the next male, (brother, nephew or uncle). They would then become “of Haltoun”. His male heir becomes “of Haltoun”. Lady Jonette would always have the right to call herself Lady of Haltoun, (later the Dowager Lady of Haltoun). She also has the courtesy title of “Lady” because her father is a Lord of Parliament.[5]
