Mary Ann was born about 1837. She emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand with her parents and brothers, Thomas and George, on the Lord William Bentinck in 1841.
She married William Thomas Clapham in 1863.[1] The children of William and Mary Ann were: Thomas William, Alice Harriett, Robert Alfred, Marian, Maud, Annie and Amy.[2]
Many older residents of Wellington will have learned with regret of the death last Tuesday of Mrs. M. A. Clapham, Pipitea street. The late Mrs. Clapham was one of the few left of the old Wellington residents who arrived in the Dominion in the early 'forties, and has spent the whole of her life in the district. Her husband predeceased her 36 years ago. Mrs. Clapham arrived in New Zealand with her parents in the ship Lord William Bentinck in 1841, her father being the late Mr. Robert Bould, sen., of Johnsonville. The interment took place at Sydney street cemetery on Thursday morning. Mrs. Clapham leaves a family of five daughters—Misses Clapham (4), of Wellington, and Mrs. Harold Smith, of Paekakariki, two sons, Mr. T. W. Clapham, of Wellington, and Mr. A. R. Clapham, of Eketahuna, and fourteen grandchildren. Mrs. Clapham was one of those who signed the presentation to the Duke of York—now H.M. the King—on his visit to New Zealand in 1901, and was one of the few who signed the next presentation to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in Wellington in 1920.[3]
She passed away in 1926[4][5] and was buried in the Sydney Street (now Bolton Street) Cemetery.[6]
