Biography

Richmond Irving Bowie, the son of William Benjamin Bowie and Anne Hall Clark was born in Prince George's County MD 2 July 1858. He died in Prince George's County MD 16 December 1923. [1]

JUDGE BOWIE DIES AT MELLWOOD HOME

Presiding Justice of Prince Georges County Orphans’ Court Was Sixty-Five.

Judge R. Irving Bowie, presiding justice of the orphans' court of Prlnce Georges county. Md for the past twenty years, died at the family home, in Mellwood, Md.. yesterday, of heart failure. He was sixty-five years old. The funeral will be held tomorrow at Trinity Church. Upper Marlboro, Rev. Francis E. McManus, the pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the old Bowie family plot in the church graveyard, where for several centuries the Bowies have been | buried.

Judge Bowie was born July 2, 1858, on the Bowie estate, near where he made his home. He had been a member of the bench of the orphans’ court of Prince Georges county, Md., for twenty years and its presiding Justice. At the November election he was again elected to that position, and Gov. Ritchie immediately reappointed him as the chief justice of that court. He was a democrat and a man of Influence in the councils of his party, state and nationally. His wife. Mrs. Effie Gwynn Bowie, is a member of the Maryland democratic state central committee from Prince Georges county. Judge Bowie was married twice, his first wife being Miss Ella Beall. Two sons of the first marriage survive, William Irving Bowie of Baltimore and H. Addison Bowie of Washington. Seven children of the second marriage survive—Mrs. Frank H. Hall, Effie. Clotilda, Gwynn, Benjamin. Keen and Richard Bowie. His wife survives.
