Biography

William Boyd (1818-1893) was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 9th July 1818 and christened at Great Hamilton Street Reformed Presbyterian Church on the 2nd August 1818. He was the son of a writing master/teacher, William Boyd & Elizabeth Macfarlane. [1]

Both his mother and stepmother had died before the 1841 census, which showed William, his father and his 3 surviving stepbrothers living at 193 Hill Street in Glasgow. He was working as a clerk at that time. [2]

On the 31st August 1847 he married Sarah Dunn Macindoe in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He was, by this time, an iron merchant in Glasgow [3]

and he was living at West Campbell Street, Glasgow in 1851 with his wife and stepbrother Dugald. [4]

The next decade saw the addition of 5 children to the family (but 1 died in infancy) and 2 house moves, firstly Bath Street, Blythswood [5] then Mansfield Place, West Regent Street, Blythswood by 1860. [6] [7] [8]

His business was thriving and expanding which allowed him to move out of the city to Rosslyn Terrace, Partick. [9] Of his 8 children still living, one had married and moved away but the other 7 were still living at home with William & Sarah in 1881. [10]

The 1880's brought great change both at home and abroad. The oldest 3 of William's sons emigrated to America to work in the iron and steel industry there. By 1891, William had retired and moved to Portobello near Edinburgh where he lived at Argyle Crescent with Sarah and 2 of their younger children. [11]

William died there on the 14th April 1893. [12] [13]
