Lewis was born in 1921. He was the son of John Boyette and Mollie Bowden. He passed away in 1984 of lung cancer. Lewis never married.

Military
Lewis was a Sargent in the US Army during World War II. He enlisted in Richmond, Virginia, on May 20, 1943. On his enlistment form his civilian occupation description was "Skilled occupations in production of industrial chemicals."[4] In a ceremony in White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, in 1945, he was decorated with honor.[5]

1930, In 1930 he was living in a home headed by his mother in Hopewell, Virginia.[6]
1950, In 1950 he was a retail store clerk in Suffolk, Virginia.[7]
