James' life was marked by his service in the American Civil War. He enlisted in Company "A" of the 8th Regiment Alabama Volunteer Infantry. His military journey began on May 8, 1861, in Marion County. However, the war brought trials and tribulations; he was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Following his capture, he was confined at Fort Delaware Prison in Delaware. His health deteriorated, leading to his transfer to the U.S.A. James' personal life was marked by two marriages. His first wife was Susan Ester C Ivey from Alabama. Together, they had six children:
John Hinton Bradley (1853-1905), who later moved to Texas. Mary A L Willis (born 1856, death around 1900?), also in Texas. James "Thomas" Bradley (1857-1932). Caroline "Callie" M Goins (1860-1901). Jefferson Bradley (born 1862, death unknown). Susan Mandy "Amanda" Carter (1863-1948). In 1870, James remarried, this time to Eliza Logan, the daughter of Coleman and Cynthia Logan, on December 29. This union brought forth a son, Edward "Lee" Bradley (1873-1939), whose memorial can be found under Find A Grave (FAG) ID#111447716.
