Biography

Mark Bradley was born on September 15, 1886, in Oneida, Kansas, to Ellis Bradley and Nancy Vest.^[1] He was the youngest of his surviving siblings.

His father died on October 2, 1898, when Mark was 12 years old. His mother had been bedridden for several years by then.^[2] At the 1900 census, he was living in Oneida with his mother and his older brothers Colonel and Curtis as well as a servant named Sara Hanes and her 3-year-old daughter Maudie.^[3]

On August 14, 1903, a month before he turned 17, his mother granted him "all privileges from this date to transact his own business the same as one of proper age and that I will not be responsible for any debts he may contract."^[4] She died on May 19, 1906, when he was 19 years old. He was still living in Oneida at the time.^[5]

Mark married Gracie Rhoades on March 10, 1910, in Atchison County, Missouri. He had been living in Nishnabotna at the time.^[6] At the 1910 census, they lived on a rented farm in Clark Township, Atchison County, Missouri.^[7] Their daughter Bernice Gertrude was born on September 13, 1912,^[8] and Mary Cloma was born on March 27, 1916.^[9] At the 1920 census, they lived in Brock, Nebraska, on a rented property.^[10]

By 1924, the Bradleys were living in Bellflower, California. On November 17, Gracie prematurely gave birth to twin girls. The first twin, Mabel, died two hours after she was born,^[11] and the second twin was stillborn.^[12] At an unknown point before this, they had had another child who was also stillborn or died young.

The family (minus Bernice, who had moved out by that point) moved to a different home in Bellflower between April 3 and April 16, 1930. As a result, they were counted twice in the 1930 census. On April 3, they were living at 621 Olive Street in a home that they rented for $20 per month.^[13] By April 16, they were living at 722 East Olive Street with an unrelated 67-year-old man named Amos R. Bradley. The new home was rented for $15 per month.^[14]

The family lived at 8 Gardenia Avenue in Long Beach, California, at the 1940 census, and they rented their home for $23 per month. They had been living in the same house in 1935. Mark worked for 10 full weeks as a house painter in 1939 and made a total of $250 that year. He also received at least $50 from another source. He had worked 16 hours the week of March 24, 1940.^[15] In 1942, he was living at 1707 East Anaheim Street in Long Beach.^[16] This address still exists but now belongs to Mor Wireless & Repair.

By the 1950 census, Gracie and Mark had divorced or separated and Mark was living with his daughter Bernice and her family at 2970 Coolidge Street in Long Beach. He had worked 50 hours the week before the census was taken.^[17]

Mark died at 2:00 AM on January 14, 1960, at the Los Angeles County Harbor General Hospital in Torrance. His death was caused by acute coronary occlusion due to generalized arteriosclerosis. He was 73 years old when he died and worked as a house painter for 50 years before retiring. He lived in the same house as he did at the 1950 census before he went to the hospital. He was buried on January 16 in Sunnyside Memorial Park, which has since been renamed to Forest Lawn.^[18] Gracie was buried next to him when she died 21 years later.^[19]
