Biography
JW Brannen was the child of Jesse William and Carrie Manning born about 1937. He is shown on the 1940 census living with Jesse W as head of household and Carrie as a servant, and JW Lane Jr listed as the servant's son.
What actually was going on, is Jesse was already married to Lydia Marion Green and he had left her and went to live with Carrie and the son they shared together. We assume Jesse listed Carrie as servant to hide his indiscretions and Carrie claimed her child was fathered by another man with the last name "Lane." Later, Jesse divorced his wife Lydia and family lore says Jesse and Carrie were married in 1936 - but that's not what the census states. It is questionable whether they were actually married while he was still married to Lydia, or if they had the child out of wedlock (not unheard of but very frowned upon in that era.)
Later Jesse William "JW" was proudly displayed as his true name, a Junior as a tribute to his father's name.
JW married Dorothy Ann Schelpert and had a son, James Ricky Brannen 1959-living.
