Biography

This profile is part of the Carrowreagh Townland, Killedan One Place Study.

Mary was born in 1872 in Brackloon, Carrowreagh near Kiltimagh, County Mayo. She was one of nine children in the family of John Brennan and Mary Breheny who were farmers.

In 1901 at the age of 28, Mary married Patrick Lydon, a farmer in nearby Ballyglass village of Carrowreagh. The Ireland Census of that year listed Mary as daughter-in-law in the household of her husband's parents, Patt and Honor Lydon. However, her husband was not listed; perhaps he was temporarily working elsewhere.

By 1911 Mary and Pat had birthed five children. Their firstborn, Patrick, died at the age of four months from "inanition," exhaustion due to lack of nourishment. Perhaps he was born prematurely, his digestive system affected by immaturity. As was common at the time, he had no medical attention.

At the age of 40, Mary died from pulmonary tuberculosis in the Swinford Workhouse, which at that time was a care facility run by Catholic nuns. Mary had been diagnosed nine months before her death. She passed away in February 1911, when her child Bridget was nine years old, Mary was six, James was five, and Ellen was sixteen months.

The Ireland Census, collected a few weeks later, record husband Patrick as a widow and his widowed mother, Honor Lydon, as the adults in the household of six.
