André Breton was a French author and poet. As leader and principal theorist of the surrealist movement, he is a major figure in 20th century French art and literature.
André Robert Breton was born on 19 February 1896 at Tinchebray (Orne). He was the son of Louis Justin Breton and Marguerite Marie Eugénie Le Gougues. In 1921 his parents had moved to Lorient in Brittany.[1]
He married Simone Kahn on 15 September 1921 in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. The witnesses were Paul Valéry and Gaston Kahn.[1] Breton petitioned for a divorce in November 1929, following his meeting with Suzanne Muzard. The divorce was granted by the Seine civil court on 30 March 1931.[1]
