Biography

Name

Hannah _____ (She was NOT a Brewster; see Research Notes below).

Marriage

Hannah married about 1655 to John Thompson. [1]

Death

Hannah died at Setauket (Brookhaven), Suffolk, New York on October 4, 1687. [1]

Research Notes

Hannah has been disconnected as the daughter of Nathaniel Brewster, for his daughter Hannah married Samuel Thompson.

Countless online genealogies have connected this Hannah to one of the early Brewster families in America. This relationship has been found to be in error. [1]
  • Thompson's History of Long Island names the wife of John Thompson as Hannah, daughter of Jonathan Brewster, and grand-daughter of Elder William Brewster, of the Mayflower. [2] The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record[3] and the Genealogy of the Strong Family[4] both repeat the statement, as does The Family Record.[5]
  • In The Mayflower Descendant[6] is the following: "Samuel Starr married Hannah ye daughter of Jon'an Brewster, 23rd of December, 1664."[7] This entry was made by Obadiah Bruen, who was town recorder at the time. Some years later Hannah Brewster's brother-in-law, Daniel Wetherell, was elected recorder, which office he held for many years. If this entry in the town records had been wrong, he would have noticed it. We are not dependent on this record alone for proof that Jonathan Brewster's daughter Hannah did NOT marry John Thompson. [1]
  • A deed dated February 14, 1661/2 records a conveyance from John Picket and Benjamin Brewster, to their sisters Grace Wetherell and Hannah Brewster. [8] In this deed she is called Brewster by her brother and brother-in-law, six years after John Thompson is said to have married her. As she was living in New London in February 1687/8, as Starr's widow, and was in full communion with the first church there at the time of Mr. Saltonstall's ordination on November 25, 1691, it is certain that she was not even a second wife of John Thompson. The only wife of John Thompson was named Mary. The claim that he married Hannah Brewster has been discredited for more than 100 years.

Although totally discredited more than 100 years ago, Benjamin Thompson's error-filled history is still being copied. “It is extremely doubtful if more errors have ever illuminated any page of 'history' ...than are strung together in the ...[family history] excerpt from Mr. Thompson's History of Long Island." John Denison Champlin,, Thompson and Brewster, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (1915), republished in Genealogies of Long Island Families Vol. II pp. 147-52 (1987).

The person profiled here never existed.

Im pretty confident of this/my line back to James Smith-105579 and Topping-312 . He is the son of Job Smith-180076 and his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeths identity is uncertain in this line due to the Brewster issue. (no pun intended). I have her here as a daughter of Thompson-4838 , per the research of Tammy Whitcomb-416 , but there are several versions and some inconsistencies among sources, probably due to the large size of the intermarried families with similar names and namesakes, event dates and locations.

Thanks for piquing my interest again!

Hi, Tamara -- I have been flummoxed by this cast of characters for a while, so anything I offer is theory and question, not even "suggestion". I got my first information from Thompson's History of Long Island/Dwight's Strong family -- not the same publication but the latter picked up information from the former, so the same in that regard. At that time, I read that Hannah Brewster m. John Thompson, and Samuel Thompson was their son, who later married Hannah Brewster, daughter of Nathaniel. Since the Hannah who married John was not of either William or Jonathan Brewster of the Mayflower, who then, were her parents? I'm thinking it's possible that she was a daughter of FRANCIS Brewster, Brewster-432, of New Haven. Nathaniel was not having kids in 1640. Thoughts?
