Charles E Brewster was born in 1815 in New York, United States. He was married to Hannah Steel 13 January 1828 by Justice of the Peace, Joel Jarvis.[1] He lived near the swamps located just east of Albany Avenue in present-day Amityville.[1] He was a descendant of the indigenous people from that inhabited the area before the arrival of European settlers and as such was labeled "a free person of color."[1]
In the 1850 census Charles (age 41) was in Huntington, Suffolk, New York where the family stayed until at least 1870.[2][3][4][5]
In the 1880 census Charles (age 67), Laborer, was the married head of household in Babylon, Suffolk, New York.[6]
Charles died on 16 February 1887 in Amityville, Babylon, Suffolk, New York.[7]
