Matthias was born about 1695. He was possibly a native of Ireland but also possibly England. The Brickell name is most commonly found in Dorset. It is also possible that he is an artifact of family memory, as there is only one source for him[1].
He allegedly came to America in 1724 together with his brother, Dr John Brickell, the naturalist[1]. They arrived on the same ship that brought Governor Burrington. He was the first resident preacher west of the Chowan river in North Carolina, moving there in 1730[1].
He passed away in 1758 in North Carolina[1].
