Margaret was born in Taupo, New Zealand in 1873 [1], the youngest daughter of Ben and Ellen Brickell.
Her father was drowned in the Petane River, Hawkes Bay, when she was only nine months old, and she was then raised by her grandmother Thompson in Howick, Auckland.
Margaret married Patrick Smyth 11 August 1889 [2] and went to live in Moore Street, Howick. Auckland.
Margaret refused to have the water or power put on to her house, and considered herself well off because she was never bothered by power cuts. In the latter years of her life, however, when she was living with her daughters, she became very attached to her radio and loved to listen to parliament.
The small house in Moore St was Margaret's home for 38 years of marriage and another 26 years as a widow. The last years of her life were spent in the homes of her daughters, Mary, Connie and Clarice[3].
She died aged 92 on 19 May 1965 [4]
