Biography

John Brierley was born about 1806 in Prestwich, Lancashire, England [1][2] and was baptised on 10 November1805 at Prestwich Parish Church [3]. His parents were Thomas Brierley and Sarah Unknown[4].

He married Ann Burrows on 6 August 1826 at Prestwich Parish Church . Witnesses were George King and William Kay. [5]. Together they had 8 children:

  1. Catherine Brierly,
  2. James Brierley,
  3. Hannah Brierley,
  4. George Brierley,
  5. John Brierley>,
  6. Nancy Brierley,
  7. Sarah Brierley,
  8. Alice Brierley.

In 1841 he is living in Rooden Lane, Prestwich Cum Oldham, Lancashire, England aged 35 with his wife Ann also shown as 35 (the 1841 ages were rounded) and his entire family (of 6 at the time), apart from James born about 1828 (See research note on James Brierley (abt.1828-)) and Alice who hadn't been born yet. His occupation is given as a weaver [1].

In 1861 he is still living in Rooden Lane (maybe the same house, the enumerator has omitted numbers) in Prestwich, Lancashire, England. His age is given as 55 and his wife's as 54. He only has some of his family with him; George (20) and Alice (18). His son John (24) is now married and staying there with his wife Elizabeth (31) and their daughter Sarah (1). John the elder's occupation is shown as gardener.[2]. It is not clear on the census record if John the younger is living in the same house or next door. He is recorded as head which normally indicates a new household but the oblique mark which normally separates households is missing.

Research Notes

In 1851 his occupation is gardener (CMW).

This looks like it came from a census record but no source is recorded in my wife's tree. This may give evidence of James. I haven't found their 1851 census record yet. (JGW).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
