Calvin started the War of 1812 as a Major in the local militia in New York State; ended the war with the rank of Lt. Col. and as commander of the 108th Regiment (sometime referred to as the 100th Regiment) of New York Militia under MGen. Jacob Brown. Calvin would succeed MGen. Jacob Brown as the commander of the New York State Militia after the War of 1812.
