Biography

William Brotherton was born in Middlesex, England.

William BROTHERTON.^[1]

William was born on the 12 Dec 1786 to parents James and Mary BROTHERTON at the Lying in hospital, Endell Street, Holborn, London and christened 2 days later on 14 Dec 1786.

As a young man he worked as a biscuit baker and continued the profession until at least 1838.^{[2] [3]} He married Mary Elizabeth ELSTONE on the 29th Jul 1810 at St Savious Church in Southwark Middlesex, after the calling of the bans. ^[4]They had nine children together and resided in the St Paul Shadwell district in Middlesex.

By the time of the 1841 census Mary and William are residing at Tanper? Row, St Paul Shadwell, Middlesex residing with their four children Thomas, Ann, and Charlotte.^[5] Their eldest daughter Mary having already married in 1838. Grandson Edward Kelly Brotherton, first born son of daughter Mary is also residing there as well as Mary's sister Elizabeth Goodwin (nee Elstone).

Two younger children had at about aged 2, daughter Charlotte Sophia 1815-1817 and son John who was born in 1817-1819. It is believed two other daughters Margaret b1829 and Sarah 1836. It is not known were they were living at this time. Possibly Margaret had died but we find Sarah later married in 1871 as Sarah Fordery.

William was living at 5 Sun Tavern Row in Shadwell Middlesex when he died on 20 Dec 1849. He was buried on 6 Jan 1850 at Tower Hamlets in Middlesex.^[6][7]
