While no paper trail has been found to verify it, based on age and proximity, it seems Nathaniel Broughton was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Ragan) Broughton.
Nathaniel married Sarah Benbow apparently around 1800-1802, though no actual documentation of this has been located. Sarah, born in 1780 (according to the 1850 census of Monroe County), is believed to have been the daughter of Richard Benbow, who listed a minor daughter, Sarah, in his will dated 1784.
One of Sarah's sons, Richard, and one of Sarah's great-granddaughters would bear the name "Benbow" as their middle name.[citation needed] In addition, one of Nathaniel's grandsons would also bear the middle name Benbow and commonly was called "Ben": Arthur Benbow Broughton (1833-bef.1882), son of Nathaniel William Broughton and Ann Nettles.
1808 - Sumter Dist SC - A judgement against Adam Benbow was awarded to Sarah Benbow in the case Sarah Benbow f Natl Broughton vs Adam Benbow (the meaning of "f" is not clear). Adam had made a promissory note to Sarah Benbow for $117, which Adam refused to pay for whatever reason, despite pleads from Sarah. The court awarded her the $117 plus interest. In Oct 1809 the case went to a jury, who found for Sarah for a total of $149.92, which included damages and court costs.[1] It is not clear whether this was Sarah Benbow who became Nathaniel's wife or Sarah Benbow wife of Richard Benbow.
Nathaniel appears on the Clarendon Co, Sumter District, SC census in 1810.[2] In the household are
If the male 45+ is Edward (Nathaniel's probable father), it appears that Edward's wife Elizabeth has died.
The family left what is present-day Sumter Co, SC and moved to Monroe County, Alabama by 1814 (daughter Susannah was born 1814 in Alabama). In 1817, Sarah Broughton appears as a charter member of the Old Salem Church, Monroe County, Alabama. Edward Broughton, who is probably Nathaniel's father, is listed as deceased in the same church records that year. Also in 1817, church records indicate a Conference met concerning the baptism, among others, of Rachel Broughton (identity not certain, perhaps a daughter who later died) and Mary Ann Broughton; it may be that they were meeting because of the young age of the Rachel and Mary Ann - Mary Ann was just 7 years old in 1817. On July 27, 1839, Nathaniel and Sarah Broughton were still listed as members on the church records.
In 1817, at Monroe Co AL, John B Lorez entered a suit against Nathaniel Broughton and Christopher Coulliette (abt.1745-) to recover cost of goods and damages for goods that Broughton and Coulliette contracted to take with them to Monroe Co AL, sell, and split the money three ways among Lorez, Broughton and Coulliette. In 1822, the case finally settled in favor of Lorez, and Broughton and Coulliette were ordered to pay Lorez. However, Nathaniel later sued Coulliette in Sumter Co SC to recover funds, since apparently he footed the bill entirely to pay off Lorez. Additional information below, with links to originals of the complete court case.
4 Mar 1819 - Monroe Co AL - Nathaniel Broughton, along with Daniel Chisolm and John Snell Sr, were appointed appraisers of the estate of Landsford Owens, dec'd.[3]
5 May 1819 - Nathaniel entered land in Monroe County, AL on 5 May 1819, and on that day men by the name of Nettles, Snell, Thames - familiar family names - were also issued land in Monroe County.[4]
1833 - Monroe Co AL - The estate appraisement of Abel Farrar, dec'd, listed a note due from Nathaniel Broughton dated 22 Mar 18322 in the amount of $83.46.[5]
9 Dec 1836 - Nathaniel Broughton purchased one colt for $31.50 at the estate sale of Jonathan Thames, dec'd. His son Nathaniel Brought Junr purchased a stack of fodder.
A variety of sources indicate Nathaniel and Sarah had the following children:
In 1844, Nathaniel and Sarah sold their home and land to their daughter, Susan Broughton O'Gwynne. Nathaniel moved to Greene County, MS to live with a nephew. According to the 1850 census, it appears Sarah remained in Monroe Co AL.
For unknown reasons, Nathaniel went to live in Greene Co MS. At age 82, he is listed on the 1850 census living with a grandson, Nathaniel W Broughton (age 23), in Greene County, Mississippi.[7]
Nathaniel is listed on the Greene Co MS Slave Schedule, with five slaves:[8]
1 - Female - Age 30 - Black (Martha) 1 - Male - Age 7 - Mulatto (Henry or Anderson) 1 - Male - Age 5 - Mulatto (Henry or Anderson) 1 - Female - Age 3 - Mulatto (Caroline) 1 - Female - Age 1 - Mulatto (Mary)
Sarah, however, did not go with Nathaniel to Mississippi, for she is enumerated in Monroe Co AL on the 1850 census. She spent the rest of her life with her daughter, Susan Broughton O'Gwynne. Sarah was buried in the Old Ridge Cemetery.
Nathaniel died at Greene Co MS on or before 7 July 1852, as evidenced by his estate administrator paying Dr Mayer's bill on 7 Jul 1852.[9]
Buried Nathaniel was buried at Monroe County, Alabama. Despite a modern-style memorial bearing Nathaniel's name and dates being placed at the Scotland Cemetery at Leakesville, Greene Co MS, Nathaniel is indeed buried at Monroe County AL. His estate administration in Monroe Co AL contains the line item dated July 1852 for "Expenses bringing corpse from Miss" and the charge was $45.00.[10]

In 1817, at Monroe Co AL, John B Lorez entered a suit against Nathaniel Broughton and Christopher Coulliette (abt.1745-) to recover cost of goods and damages for goods, wares and merchandise that Broughton and Coulliette contracted to take with them from Georgia to Monroe Co AL 28 Dec 1816, sell the goods, and pay to Lorez the cost of the goods and 1/3 of the profits, which did not happen. In 1822, the case finally settled in favor of Lorez, and Broughton and Coulliette were ordered to pay Lorez, each paying 50%.
However, apparently Nathaniel paid the entire amount due in this lawsuit, for in 1830 at Sumter Co SC, he brought a suit against Christopher Coullett in order to recover the 50% portion that Coullett should have paid. By filing in Sumter Co SC, it is apparent that Coullett left Alabama and returned to South Carolina. The bills, answers, decrees and all manner of notes and inventories are included in the case file in Sumter Co, which is contained in Equity Roll 493 and which is also available online.[28] Edward Broughton agreed to be security for the costs of the case. In the file is the entire transcript from the Alabama court case, including depositions from Sarah Kearley and Nathaniel Cannon, who were children of Nathaniel Broughton's sister, Jemima (Broughton) Cannon Runnells. Also mentioned in the case is William James, who is thought to have married Nathaniel's sister Martha.

NATHANIEL BROUGHTON MIGRATED HERE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA
by Dorothy Broughton Cipperly
Nathaniel Broughton, my great-great-grandfather, was born in Charleston, SC, and served in the American Revolution under General Marion. [born 1768, too young to serve in the American Revolution]
He married Miss Benbow of Charleston [no, her parents were living in Sumter Dist SC when she was born] and moved to Monroe County in the early part of the nineteenth century. He purchased land from John O'Givynne [sic - O'Gwynne], Sr., in the community known as the Ridge. Their home was located on the Old Stage Road. They had six children, Edward T., James, Susan, Sarah, Nathaniel, and Charles Broughton.
In 1844, after their children had married, Nathaniel and Sarah sold their home and land to their daughter, Susan Broughton O'Gwynne and moved to Greene County, Miss. They lived here until 1855 when Nathaniel died. [According to the 1850 census, Sarah did not go to Mississippi, but remained in Monroe Co AL]
To comply with his will, Sarah Broughton, along with her belongings and slaves, returned to Monroe County. [According to the 1850 census, Sarah did not go to Mississippi, but remained in Monroe Co AL] She spent the rest of her life with her daughter, Susan Broughton [O'Gwynne]. Sarah was buried in the Old Ridge Cemetery.
The youngest son of Nathaniel and Sarah, Charles Richard Broughton, was my great-grandfather. He was born in Greene County, Miss [GA]., in 1820. In 1839, he married Miss Mary Rebecca Snell and took up residence near Monroeville. By 1860 he owned more land than anyone else in Monroe County."
Charles and Mary Broughton were the parents of eight children: William N., Sarah, Mary, Margaret, Susan, Nancy, and Laura Broughton.
Charles Richard Broughton died in 1897. Mary preceded him in death two years before. Both were buried in the old Ridge Cemetery.
His son, Charles Edward Broughton, my grandfather, married Miss Alice Ross, February 1884. They were the parents of Russell C., Lillie, John W., and Edward Broughton.
Charles died in 1932, and Alice in 1938. They were buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Monroeville
