Biography

Birth

John was born in 1448 the son of John Broughton and Elizabeth Stoneham. He was born at Toddington, Bedfordshire in the Toddington Manor owned by his father. There is an extensive family tree for the Broughtons[1], compiled by William Harvey (et al.) during his visitation in 1556, in which this John finds his place. John had three siblings: Elizabeth, Joan and Catherine.

Marriage

John married[1] Anne Denston about 1472 and moved to Denston[2]. Anne was the daughter of John Denston and Catherine Clopton. They most likely lived at Denston Hall, Denston, Suffolk.

Children

The children of John and Anne were :

John[3][4] (born 1473 - died young in 1492) and
Sir Robert (born 1474(?) - died[5] 1506).

The family was most likely resident at Denston Hall[6]

The notes to the will (TNA PROB 11/15/535) of Robert give the names of William, Edward and Elizabeth as siblings - children of John and Anne Denston. Some detail is provided for Elizabeth but nothing for William and Edward. The same information is provided on the Wikipedia article for Robert.

Death

John died[3] in 1479 at the age of 31. He was most likely buried in Denston:St Nicholas where his father-in-law John Denston and mother-in-law Catherine Clopton were buried in 1473 in the newly constructed church of Denston: St Nicholas.

He predeceased his father John Broughton who died in 1489. This meant that the assets of his father John Broughton of Toddington passed directly to his son John[3] (still a minor in 1489 and also skipping his generation). They then passed to his younger son Robert when his elder son John died in 1492.
