William was born in 1725. He passed away in 1781.
William came to Pennyslvania when he was 18 with his brother Mathew. It is also thought that this family changed their name to Brown when they left Scotland to avoid conflict with another Clan.
William was killed by the Indians while out making maple sugar in 1781. William settled on the land where West Waynesburg now stands, and it was from him that "Bloody Run", now "Toll Gate Run," but known on early maps as "Brown's Run", got it's name. Matthew and Vincent Brown, who were with their father at the time of his death, joined their mother, Mary Brown, in selling Mr. Brown's improvements to Captain James Seals, blacksmith, on March 29, 1785.
