Biography

Emma was born in 1876 in Stockton on Tees, Durham, England. Emma's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1876 in the Stockton district. On Emma's birth cert Jane Brown is listed as her her mother. ^[1]

In the 1881 census Emma (age 5) was the grandchild of Rachel Brown at 15 Maritime St, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.^[2]

1881 : in maritime street but separate census return to rest of the browns !!! Have now found other half of Census data - Rachel is head of house hold with children Jane L 26, Rachel 10 and William 13. Emma (grandchild 12)

1891 : Living with her "Aunty Rachel" and Family, at Maritime Street, Stockton. Working as a Bottle Washer. No James Brown Here. ^[3]

Note that Rachel is james Browns Husband on the 1871 Census.

1901 : Still with Rachel at Maritime Street, but now described in the Census as Rachel's daughter.

Marriage to Christopher Sturdy. At the time of her marriage, Emma's father was named as James Brown, however, James Brown was actually her grandfather.
