During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[1] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 18 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 21 February 1863 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.
Company Remarks
In August of 1864, he was promoted to Corporal.[2] He was absent due to an arrest in Charleston, South Carolina on 27 July 1865. Private Charles P. Thompson of Company A was also arrested around the same time.[3]

Possible match in the 1890 US Veterans Schedules for Boston, where he was known to be at some point after the war. No regiment information is given, but he's at 225 Marion Street.
