Biography

Mary Grace Brown was born on 9 November 1840 at Burnt Houses, Cockfield, Durham, England. She was the daughter of Matthew Brown and Elizabeth Watson.^[1]

In the 1841 census, Mary lived with her family at Raby Moor Houses, Cockfield.^[2]

Her father died about 1846 and her mother remarried.

In the 1851 census, she was at the house of her aunt Mary (Brown) Turnbull and her husband Cuthbert Turnbull.^[3]

Mary married Thomas Lewis in January 1862 in Darlington, Durham.^[4][5]

Thomas and Mary had four sons and five daughters:
