Mary Grace Brown was born on 9 November 1840 at Burnt Houses, Cockfield, Durham, England. She was the daughter of Matthew Brown and Elizabeth Watson.[1]
In the 1841 census, Mary lived with her family at Raby Moor Houses, Cockfield.[2]
Her father died about 1846 and her mother remarried.
In the 1851 census, she was at the house of her aunt Mary (Brown) Turnbull and her husband Cuthbert Turnbull.[3]
