Biography

James was born on 9 Feb 1836[1]. He was the son of William Bryan and Susannah Lanham.

James was referred to as 'Suddy' Bryan [2] short for Sothoron, a man whom his father purchased a part of the fishing shore on the Potomac.

James married Francis Barry on 1 December 1865. Francis Barry was the daughter of David Barry (b.1822), who owned a tract called "St Elizabeth" where the government hospital for the insane was established. They produced 7 children [3]

  1. Katie Norris Bryan (1874-1902) [4]
  2. Arthur B. Bryan [m. Elizabeth Clements].

In Jul 1883[5], the heirs at law of Juliana Barry, deceased (the Barry Children) sold to James and Francis [6] Lot 1 Hausington Sinebind 'Bonds Retreat' originally taken up by his older sister, Rebecca A.M. Bryan Plummer in 1857. The tract had been heavily mortgaged and passed for lack of payment to a trustee in Alexandria VA 1866.

Bryan's Point Fishing Shore was under lease to the federal government in 1916 and used as a fish hatchery. In 1916, "Arthur owns and lives in the old 'Suddy' Bryan homestead, works the old farm, and is the custodian of the fish hatchery"[7]. This hatchery was established in 1892 [same year the remaining Bryan homestead was sold], moved from Fort Washington where it was established in 1880.

Arthur B. Bryan married Elizabeth Clements of Charles County and they in turn had 2 children. Arthur and Elizabeth's children are James S., Blanch, Charity, Susie who married Percy Clements and Mary Eva Bryan who married her distant relative, Richard Bryan (s/o George R. Bryan). James died on 06 Sep 1900[1] of heart failure [8] and is burried at St Marys Catholic Church of Piscataway Cemetery
