Biography

Julia was born about 1829 in Brede, Sussex, England^[1] to James Bryant and Martha Thomas. Julia was the eldest of four siblings.^[2] Her family settled in Brede until at least 1846 when her brother, Henry, passed away. The 1840s were quite traumatic for Julia as her sister, Harriet, passed in 1842, her father, James, in 1844, and her sister, Prudence, in 1846. Her mother was left destitute and she herself went into service.

By 1851, Julia was working as a house servant in Tenterden, Kent with her mother, Martha, lodging nearby.^[3]

Research Notes

Julia may have moved back to Brede as there is a death record for a Julia Bryant, 1858, in Rye district which incoporates Brede.^[4] No age is cited on this record so it is difficult to ascertain if it is our Julia.
