Agnes Bryce was born in Glasgow on 8 August 1836 and was the eldest daughter of John Bryce and Jean Crawford.^[1]

On the 1851 census, Agnes, aged 14 years, is living at 7 Crown Street (Front House) in the Gorbals area of Glasgow with her parents and siblings: John (18 years), Andrew (12 years), William (10 years), Catherine (8 years) and George (6 years).^[2]

On the 1861 census, Agnes, aged 23 years, is living at 6 St James Street in the Govan area of Glasgow with her parents and siblings: Catherine (18 years) and George (16 years).^[3]
