James M. Buckley is the son of Benjamin Buckley and Sarah Castellow Buckley. He was born in 1842 in Lawrence County, Mississippi.
James was killed by a cannon ball during the Civil War. According to Thomas Ransome Buckley's memories, as told to his grand-daughter, Marilyn Buckley, James was with two other men on a hill, when the cannon ball rolled directly on them, killing them. They were in Dalton, Madison, Georgia when they died, with the origin of the cannon coming from Dalton, two miles away. Two men buried the men at the site where they died. The men that buried all three men were Bill Rutledge and William "Bill" Turnage.
