Ruth Amanda Buckwalter was born 15 February 1905 in a Mennonite community in Ephrata Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States.[1] Ruth's parents are John Adams Buckwalter (1864–1945) and Anna Bollinger Bucher (1865–1957), who were married 10 October 1886 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
On 12 May 1910, the family lived on Mount Pleasant Road in the Butts Road district of Norfolk, Virginia, United States.[2]

On 7 April 1930, Huston (27), Ruth (25), and their first son, Olen Thomas (2), lived on Mount Pleasant Road in the Butts Road District. Huston worked as a polisher in an automobile plant.[6]
On 12 April 1940, The Thomas family was still on Mount Pleasant Road in the Butts District. Both Huston and Ruth Thomas were delivering newspapers.[7]

Ruth's husband, Huston, died at the age of 45 on 28 July 1951, and he was buried in Mount Pleasant Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Tragedy struck in 1955, when Ruth's son, Walter, was shot and killed in a hunting accident, leaving a widow with two small children.[8]
Ruth died 19 January 1992 in Selma, Johnston, North Carolina, and she was buried 21 January 1992 in Mount Pleasant Mennonite Church Cemetery, Chesapeake, Chesapeake, Virginia, United States.[9][10]
