John Buys was born August 10, 1907 to Hendrick and Anntje (Ver Meier) Buys in Barneveld, Holland.
He came to America at age 11 and lived at Maple Lake, MN and attended country school there. John worked as a hired man for many years in Minnesota.
John married Johanna Wiekeraad on February 12, 1931. They farmed for 37 years by Chandler. John was active in the Chandler Reformed Church and served as an Elder. He also served on the Moulton Township Board for several years. In 1968, they moved into Chandler and John worked for Huisken Meats from 1968-1977. John also served as secretary of the Chandler Burial Association for many years.
After retirement, he and Johanna did volunteer work bringing commodities from Slayton to Chandler. John enjoyed playing pool and cards with friends, gardening, and helping his friends and neighbors with many projects. John became a resident of the Slayton Manor in September 1997 and died their on Thursday, October 11, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna; his children and their spouses, Anna and Jim Gorter of Zeeland, MI, Gerald and Berdena of Slayton, Herman and Dorothy of Hardwick, Ed and Donna of Whitewood, SD, Leroy and Patsy of Chandler and Linda and Bob Schelhaas of Edgerton, 25 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; three brothers, Paul of Denver, CO, Jim of Quincy, WA and Don of Lynden, WA; four sisters, Jeanette Gru of St. Paul, MN, Wilhelmina Ten Kley of Lynden, WA, Henrietta Van Zwol of Ajo, AZ and Martena Van Dyke of Sioux Center, IA; and one daughterr-in-law, Genevieve Sankey of Chandler.
His parents, one son, Melvin, one granddaughter, Beverly, four brothers, Everet, Gerrit, Bill and Henry, two sisters, Bertha and Marie and a stepsister, Jennie Kallemyn preceded him in death.
