John was born c.1829 in Middlesex, son of Charles Bulpitt, and became a bricklayer like his father.[1][2]
On 18 Nov 1850, he married Elizabeth Munro in St John's, Southwark, London. Both parties were of full age, and living in St John's, and the marriage was witnessed by John Eugene [?] Garnett and Mary Ann Bulpitt. [1] John and Elizabeth had two children born in England :
In 1856, John, Elizabeth and 4-yr-old Charles emigrated to Australia aboard the Lady MacDonald, leaving Isabella behind in London in the care of her Munro grandparents.[2] They settled in Melbourne, and in 1859, John Bulpitt is recorded living on Nelson St East in Prahran.[5] Two more daughters, Martha and Louisa, were born here but died in infancy :
Elizabeth died in 1861 [10] leaving John a widower with two small children, Charles and Louisa. Little Louisa died shortly after, aged just 10 months.[9] Eventually, John placed his young son, Charles, in the care of his sister-in-law, Isabella and her husband Charles Benson, and moved north.
In Mudgee, John met Mary Ann (or Alice) Seymour, with whom he had several children before their marriage in 1878.[11][12] They are believed to have been the parents of :
